Co-organized by the Irish Government, the European Commission, the Marine Institute, and the University of Galway, the hybrid event “2013 – 2023: 10 years of the Galway Statement. Celebrating a decade of marine research cooperation along and across the Atlantic Ocean – Our Shared Resource” will take place on 5-6 July 2023 in Galway, Ireland.
The Galway Statement, signed in 2013 by Canada, the European Union, and the United States of America,
marked a significant milestone in the history of marine research cooperation along and across the Atlantic. Since then, more than 1000 research teams worked on mapping the North Atlantic seabed, discovered new species, studied the effects of climate change on biodiversity, created a network of floating universities, and more.
These successes have led to a new ocean-scale cooperation, culminating in the signing of the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance Declaration in July 2022.
Bringing together European and international Atlantic partners and actors, this event will not only be a celebration of past achievements, but it will also lead the way up towards the 2023 All-Atlantic Forum in South Africa.
