UNESCO’s World Heritage Marine Programme and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC) are joining forces to:
- Honour the many incredible women scientists whose leadership helps protect World Heritage marine sites for future generations, and
- Highlight the need to fill ocean science gaps for the conservation of World Heritage marine sites (in the framework of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021–2030);
You can participate by sending a short video of a woman scientist highlighting her invaluable work in support of the conservation of the 49 marine sites inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
The best films will be featured on World Oceans Day, 8 June 2019, at UNESCO HQ and through their social media worldwide. Deadline for submitting videos is Friday 10 May.
This year, the theme for World Oceans Day is “Gender and the Ocean”, an opportunity to explore the gender dimension of humankind’s relationship with the ocean. Gender equality is also one of the six main pilars or Responsible Research and Innovation, has addressed in the last three years by the H2020-funded MARINA project.
