EurOcean Member Nausicaa, the French National Sea Centre, hosted the 1st High Seas International Conference in June 2018 to raise public awareness and mobilize civil society on the challenges of the High Seas.
Interventions from country representatives and speakers of the scientific community, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, intergovernmental organizations and academia provided their insights about the High Seas governance, the Blue Society, and the legal challenges regarding the conservation and the sustainable management of marine resources.
Nausicaa produced video interviews to capture some of the participants thoughts during that meeting. Those interviews are now available in two films in English:
- A short introduction to the challenges of the High seas
- A longer explanation of the current context and Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) negotiations steps
These films have been thought to inform a large audience of people and professionals interested in marine affairs. Please feel free to publicise them through your networks.
The 1st High Seas International Conference took place in Boulogne-sur-mer and was co-organized with l’Agence Française pour la Biodiversité (AFB), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Global Ocean Forum, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the World Ocean Network and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
