A special issue on the “Behavior and Effects of Nanoscale Materials and Plastics — Understanding the Mechanisms of Toxicity” to be published in Applied Sciences - Open Access Journal by MDPI (ISSN 2076-3417) is now open to the scientific community for submissions. We encourage submissions that draw on a variety of experimental and review articles. The guest editors are Vera Lúcia Maria (CESAM´s researcher) and Ângela Barreto (CESAM´s researcher).

A photography from Tânia Caetano, CESAM’s researcher, was selected for the cover of the Marine Biotechnology Journal’s April issue. The photography illustrates the culture of a halophilic microorganism from the Archaea domain surrounded by a high amount of salt. The scientific work included in the volume and which led to the selection of this image is entitled "Antibiotics from Haloarchaea: What Can We Learn from Comparative Genomics?”. The work was carried out by Inês Castro, MSc in Microbiology, from the Molecular Biotechnology Laboratory under the supervision of the Assistant Researcher Tânia Caetano and Assistant Professor with aggregation Sónia Mendo (CESAM&DBio). The study explores comparative genomics as method to deepen the knowledge on the mechanisms of secondary metabolites biosynthesis. The biosynthesis of halocins was used as proof-of-concept, which are antibiotics produced by Archaea halophils - the haloarchaea.
