Webinar Distinguishing Marine Spatial Planning and Marine Protected Area Planning to Advance Conservation

On 22 October 2025, OCTO will host a webinar exploring the distinctions and synergies between Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and Marine Protected Area (MPA) planning.

While both approaches are widely used to support sustainable ocean use and conservation, they differ in scope, objectives, and methodologies. The webinar will highlight why recognizing these differences is crucial, particularly in the context of climate change, and how combining both processes can strengthen conservation outcomes and sustainable management.

Speakers Catarina Frazão Santos (University of Lisbon) and Tundi Agardy (Sound Seas) will also share insights on adopting climate-smart planning practices, bridging siloes, and fostering synergies between MSP, MPA, and other area-based tools such as OECMs.
