CESAM participated in the Atlantic Aquaculture Forum, held on 12–13 November at TERINOV in Terceira, Azores, where policymakers, scientists and industry representatives met to discuss sustainable aquaculture across the Atlantic.
Rui Rocha, CESAM researcher and Vice-President of S2Aqua CoLAB, delivered a keynote on the limitations of traditional community-based aquaculture models. He highlighted structural challenges and outlined alternatives focused on market access, stronger value chains, professionalised training and support for established producers. Rocha also moderated a panel on governance and policy coherence for expanding aquaculture in Portuguese-speaking African countries.
The forum further showcased CESAM’s applied contributions in Africa, from innovative tilapia feed formulations to oyster and mussel farming initiatives, and its strengthened role in the sector through industry collaborations, the ProAqua+ flagship project and the CESAM/Riasearch Chair.
