EurOcean Member CESAM Maps Vulnerable Deep-Atlantic Ecosystems

CESAM is partnering in DeepVision and Coral Cartography, two international projects funded with around €3 million under the UN Decade of Ocean Science’s Challenger 150 programme, co-led by CESAM researcher Ana Hilário.

Led by Plymouth Marine Laboratory, DeepVision (€1.7 million, Bezos Earth Fund) uses AI to map cold-water coral reefs and sponge grounds, while Coral Cartography (€1.3 million, CORDAP) will create the largest atlas of Atlantic cold-water corals, standardising datasets and mapping distribution and diversity.

With partners across Europe, Africa and South America, the projects form a collaborative platform that accelerates deep-sea mapping and supports evidence-based conservation, reinforcing CESAM’s strategic role in this field.
