Research from CESAM at the University of Aveiro has been highlighted in the Portuguese newspaper Expresso following recent severe erosion episodes along the Portuguese coast.

After successive storms, areas such as Mira Beach and Forte Novo (Quarteira) recorded significant shoreline retreat. CESAM researchers point to structural sediment deficits—particularly along the Espinho–Figueira da Foz stretch linked to Douro River dams—combined with high-energy wave events as key factors exacerbating coastal vulnerability.

While artificial beach nourishment has helped mitigate some impacts, scientists warn of a growing trend towards narrower beaches under increasing storm intensity and wave energy.

CESAM’s contribution provides essential scientific monitoring and context to better understand coastal erosion dynamics and inform future coastal management strategies.
