New Online Course Supports Implementation of the BBNJ Agreement

As the BBNJ Agreement enters into force and global discussions continue at PrepCom III, a new online course has been launched to help turn ambition into action. Developed by the UN Ocean Decade and UNESCO-IOC’s OceanTeacher Global Academy, the course explores how ocean science, data and knowledge can support the Agreement’s implementation.

“Using Science, Knowledge and Tools to Operationalise the BBNJ Agreement” brings together insights from over 80 global experts and is structured around three modules. It covers the Agreement’s background, its four key pillars, and the tools, actors and mechanisms needed to put it into practice.

Free and open to all, the course is particularly suited for early and mid-career professionals working in ocean-related fields. It is self-paced (around 20 hours), delivered in English, and includes a certificate upon completion. Registrations are now open, with the course starting on 13 April 2026.

This course is the first in a broader training series supporting the global ocean community in implementing the BBNJ Agreement through science-based approaches.
