EurOcean Member CESAM Leads Study Showing Antidepressants Can Alter Fish Personality
Researchers from CESAM at the University of Aveiro, together with partners from Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) and Institut Químic de Sarrià (Universitat Ramon Llull), have shown that early exposure to the antidepressant paroxetine can cause lasting personality and stress-response changes in zebrafish.
The study reveals that exposure during embryonic development can reprogram behaviour into later life stages, raising concerns about the environmental and potential human health impacts of neuroactive pharmaceuticals.
