EurOcean Member CESAM Co-Organises 1st Ocean Research Forum to Shape Portugal’s Ocean Strategy

CESAM joined CCMAR, MARE, CIIMAR and OKEANOS to host the 1st Ocean Research Forum at the University of Aveiro, bringing together researchers, policymakers and national stakeholders to help shape Portugal’s ocean strategy for the next decade.

The Forum marked the launch of a strategic guiding document developed collaboratively by the country’s leading marine research centres. The document aims to support future public policies, research priorities and investment in the ocean domain at a crucial moment for the national scientific and technological system.

Discussions highlighted the key role of science in supporting a sustainable blue economy, strengthening evidence-based decision-making and improving coordination between research institutions. Participants also emphasised the importance of long-term data, scientific infrastructure and innovation to address challenges such as climate change, ocean warming and marine resource management.

The initiative represents an important step toward stronger national alignment in marine science, reinforcing collaboration and positioning the ocean as a strategic priority for Portugal’s future.
