EurOcean Member Ifremer at the Heart of Mission Neptune

Ifremer is playing a leading role in Mission Neptune, a new international public–private initiative designed to accelerate deep-ocean exploration and strengthen science-based governance of the high seas.

Launched in the context of the High Seas Treaty (BBNJ), Mission Neptune aims to expand scientific knowledge of the deep ocean and support informed decision-making for the conservation and sustainable management of areas beyond national jurisdiction.

Bringing together research organisations, oceanographic fleets, space agencies, philanthropic foundations and private partners, the initiative focuses on major scientific challenges such as deep-sea biodiversity, seamount ecosystems, the marine carbon cycle, and sustainable approaches to marine genetic resources.

Ifremer co-chairs the Mission Neptune executive committee, coordinates its scientific council, and contributes to the overall coordination of the initiative. The programme is structured around four operational pillars:

  • Neptune Expeditions, certified ocean exploration campaigns
  • Neptune Fellows, a fellowship programme for early-career researchers
  • Neptune Forum, a high-level strategic event to be held annually in Paris from 2026
  • Neptune Explorers Gallery, dedicated to outreach and public engagement

By 2027, Mission Neptune aims to certify multiple exploration campaigns each year, establish academic chairs and expand its international consortium, helping place ocean knowledge at the centre of European and global ocean governance.
