As of 1 March 2026, the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IO PAN) has a new Director. By decision of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Prof. Sławomir Sagan has been appointed to lead the institute for a four-year term running until February 2030.

The official nomination was made by the President of the Academy, Prof. Marek Konarzewski, during a ceremony attended by the Academy’s Vice-President Prof. Mirosława Ostrowska and the outgoing Director, Prof. Jan Marcin Węsławski. The event also welcomed Magdalena Czarzyńska‑Jachim, Mayor of Sopot, highlighting the institute’s strong ties with the local community.

EurOcean warmly congratulates Prof. Sagan and wishes him every success in strengthening IO PAN’s national and international role in ocean research.
