European Commission Launches Public Consultation on the European Ocean Act

The European Commission has launched a public consultation to help shape the upcoming European Ocean Act, a key legislative proposal under the European Ocean Pact expected in 2026.

Open until 16 July 2026, the consultation invites stakeholders, public authorities, experts, citizens and coastal communities to share their views through a structured questionnaire. It follows an earlier call for evidence published in January and aims to ensure the Ocean Act reflects real-world needs.

The European Ocean Act will strengthen EU ocean governance by creating a single framework bringing together economic, climate, environmental and social objectives for the sustainable use and protection of ocean resources. Key goals include supporting the priorities of the European Ocean Pact, simplifying governance and reporting, modernising maritime spatial planning, creating a legal basis for the OceanEye observation initiative, and aligning with the revision of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
