Ricardo Calado, researcher at CESAM – Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies and the Department of Biology of the University of Aveiro, has been awarded the 2026 UA Researcher Award in recognition of his scientific contributions to the blue economy.
The distinction was presented as part of the UA Awards, which recognise excellence and impact within the university community. The jury granted Ricardo Calado the first prize, highlighting his outstanding scientific career and research output, with more than 300 published articles focused mainly on the blue economy.
Beyond his research, Ricardo Calado has played a key role in leading strategic initiatives, including the creation of the Aquaculture Innovation and Technology Centre (CITAQUA), currently under development near ECOMARE. The centre will integrate the Aveiro hub of Hub Azul – Network of Infrastructures for the Blue Economy, further strengthening the University of Aveiro’s role in promoting innovation for the marine sector.
Receiving the award, Ricardo Calado noted that the distinction is an incentive to continue promoting excellence in blue bioeconomy research and to contribute to unlocking the potential of the Portuguese sea.
The UA Awards ceremony took place on 17 April, celebrating individuals who contribute to advancing knowledge, education and societal impact.
