The Fundação Gaspar Frutuoso and OKEANOS – University of the Azores are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to join the new microGASP project in the Azores, Portugal.
The project investigates how the degradation of microplastics in the marine environment may contribute to the production and release of greenhouse gases, including CO₂, CH₄ and N₂O, and how this process could influence air–sea exchange and climate feedbacks. The research combines fieldwork, laboratory experiments, microplastic characterisation, gas measurements and modelling across multiple scales.
The team is seeking candidates with a multidisciplinary background or strong interest in marine pollution, microplastics, oceanography, biogeochemistry, environmental chemistry, climate science or related fields. The position offers the opportunity to work in the Azores, a unique North Atlantic natural laboratory closely connected to regional and international marine research initiatives.
The vacancy is open internationally via EURAXESS, with applications accepted until 29 April 2026.
