EurOcean Member CESAM Leads Discovery of Hidden Coral Forests in Cabo Verde

Recent research led by Teresa Amaro (CESAM/Department of Biology, University of Aveiro) has uncovered extensive black coral forests and gorgonian gardens around Santo Antão Island, Cabo Verde, revealing previously undocumented marine biodiversity hotspots at mesophotic depths (30–60 metres).

Using closed-circuit rebreather technology, the research team surveyed around 40 sites and documented remarkably dense coral and gorgonian habitats that provide essential refuge and nursery areas for fish larvae and other marine organisms, while supporting a rich diversity of sponge species.

The discovery provides valuable baseline knowledge for the conservation and future management of Cabo Verde's marine ecosystems, highlighting the importance of exploring and protecting these little-known underwater habitats. The research was highlighted in the radio program “90 Segundos de Ciência”.
