Researchers from CESAM at the University of Aveiro have contributed to the European Seagrass Recommendations 2026, the first Europe-wide scientific consensus document providing guidance for the protection, monitoring and restoration of seagrass meadows.
Published by the European Seagrass Restoration Alliance (ESRA), the recommendations bring together expertise from researchers across 17 European countries and outline eight strategic priorities to support policymakers, practitioners and funding bodies in restoring these vital coastal ecosystems. The guidance comes at a key moment for the implementation of the European Nature Restoration Regulation and aligns with the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030).
CESAM researcher Ana Sousa participated in the expert working group that developed the recommendations, while fellow researcher Pedro Coelho contributed to the review process, reinforcing the institute's role in advancing science that supports evidence-based marine conservation and restoration.
