Research from CESAM, featured in the programme 90 Segundos de Ciência, showcases how emerging monitoring tools are improving the understanding of coastal erosion processes driven by storms and extreme weather events.
Paulo Baganha Baptista explains how a combination of satellite imagery, video monitoring stations and other observation methods is being used to track coastal changes in near real time, complementing traditional field-based approaches.
The research highlights recent erosion dynamics along the coast, including at Mira, where successive storms led to rapid shoreline retreat within short time intervals, underlining the cumulative impact of extreme weather events on coastal stability.
