New Ocean Decade Programme to Support Implementation of the BBNJ Agreement

The entry into force of the BBNJ Agreement in January 2026 marks a major step forward in ocean governance, but many countries, especially Small Island Developing States and Least Developed Countries, still face capacity gaps to implement it effectively.

The new BBNJ Science to Action Programme, led by the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) and endorsed by the Ocean Decade, addresses this challenge by strengthening scientific standards, tools, and training needed for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), Area-Based Management Tools (ABMTs), and Marine Genetic Resources (MGRs).

Through collaborative research, standardised methodologies, and science–policy support, the programme aims to turn BBNJ commitments into practical, science-based action.
