The Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) at the University of Aveiro is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2026 with a series of initiatives highlighting its contribution to environmental and marine science, sustainability, and interdisciplinary research.
To mark the milestone, CESAM has launched the exhibition "From the Atmosphere to the Deep Sea: Science Caring for the Future", now open at the Fábrica Centro Ciência Viva de Aveiro until the end of April 2027. The exhibition showcases two and a half decades of research spanning climate change, biodiversity, marine ecosystems, environmental pollution, circular economy, and deep-sea innovation, illustrating how CESAM translates scientific knowledge into practical solutions for environmental management and policymaking.
Through projects addressing topics such as wildfire resilience, microplastics, seafood sustainability, migratory species, and artificial intelligence for deep-sea conservation, the exhibition highlights CESAM's integrated One Health approach and its commitment to protecting both people and the environment.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, CESAM will also join CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials in a commemorative ceremony on 11 November 2026 at the University of Aveiro. The event will celebrate 25 years of both Associated Laboratories, bringing together researchers and collaborators while showcasing the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing today's scientific and societal challenges.
Together, these initiatives celebrate CESAM's scientific achievements over the past 25 years while looking ahead to future research that supports a more sustainable and resilient planet.
