A new reflection published by Portugal's National Council for the Environment and Sustainable Development (CNADS) outlines key recommendations for improving the sustainable management of the country's coastal zone, with scientific contributions from researchers at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies.

The document analyses the major challenges facing Portugal's coastline, including climate change, sea-level rise, coastal erosion, stronger storms, and increasing urban and tourism pressures. It proposes a more integrated and resilient approach to coastal planning and governance.

Henrique Queiroga, CESAM researcher and retired professor at the University of Aveiro, co-coordinated the working group responsible for preparing the reflection. The process brought together scientific experts and representatives from public and private organisations through 32 consultation sessions, helping ensure that the recommendations are grounded in scientific evidence and practical experience.

Among the proposed actions are the adoption of socio-ecological approaches to coastal planning, the revision of Portugal's National Strategy for Integrated Coastal Zone Management, the creation of Regional Sea–Land Platforms and a Coastal Geoportal, improved monitoring systems, and strengthened capacity-building for public administration.

The reflection highlights the important role of scientific expertise in supporting evidence-based coastal policies that enhance resilience, protect ecosystems, and help communities adapt to the growing impacts of climate change.
