Helena Vieira, researcher at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) and holder of the ERA Chair BESIDE at the University of Aveiro, has contributed as an expert and member of the writing team for the United Nations' Third World Ocean Assessment (WOA III).

The report is the UN's most comprehensive global assessment of the state of the ocean, bringing together the latest scientific knowledge on ocean governance, environmental pressures, marine ecosystems, and the links between ocean health, human wellbeing, and sustainable development.

Vieira contributed to chapters focusing on socio-ecological systems, sustainable and inclusive ocean economies, and the use of marine genetic resources and biotechnology. Her work supports the development of policies that promote innovation and sustainable use of marine resources while safeguarding ocean ecosystems.

Produced under the UN Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, WOA III involved 580 experts from 86 countries and was officially presented on World Ocean Day 2026 at United Nations Headquarters in New York before being published on the UN platform.

The participation of Portuguese researchers, including CESAM scientists, highlights the international contribution of Portugal's marine science community to global efforts supporting evidence-based ocean conservation and sustainable management.
