Cyprus is taking steps towards strengthening and diversifying its diving tourism sector, with the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute contributing its expertise to the development of a new national strategy.
Commissioned by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, a study prepared by CMMI assesses the current state and potential of diving tourism in Cyprus and proposes strategic directions and actions for its sustainable development. The study covers the island’s diving infrastructure, sites and regulatory framework, while also identifying opportunities to improve accessibility, safety, environmental protection and international promotion.
With 69 identified dive sites, including shipwrecks and artificial reef parks, the study highlights the potential of Cyprus’ underwater heritage and marine environment to support high-value tourism and benefit coastal communities.
Among its recommendations are stronger regulation and licensing of dive operators, improved infrastructure at dive sites, measures to protect sensitive marine areas, greater environmental awareness, and enhanced digital tools to promote Cyprus as a diving destination. The proposed strategy also encourages collaboration across tourism and diving stakeholders and the development of new experiences and packages to attract visitors beyond the traditional summer season.
A public consultation on Cyprus’ National Strategy for the Development of Diving Tourism is open until 15 September 2026, providing stakeholders and the public with an opportunity to contribute before the strategy is finalised.
