The Ocean is gaining increased recognition as a strategic domain for science and innovation in Portugal, following the joint efforts of EurOcean member CESAM in collaboration with CIIMAR, CCMAR, MARE and OKEANOS.
Building on the Aveiro Declaration on Portuguese Marine Science 2026–2035, the five research centres presented a joint vision at the Science and Innovation Meeting 2026, calling for the Ocean to be recognised as a priority area in the strategic priorities of Portugal’s new Agency for Research and Innovation (AI²).
The initiative received widespread national media coverage, bringing the Declaration’s recommendations and the importance of strengthening Portugal’s capacity in marine science, research infrastructure, observation and monitoring to a broader public debate.
