Save the Date: Seminar on Oceanic Data Sharing and the Law of the Sea

On 16 September 2026, international experts will gather at the Hydrographic Institute in Lisbon for the seminar “Oceanic Data Sharing and the Law of the Sea”. The event will explore the scientific, legal and operational dimensions of sharing ocean data and its role in supporting ocean governance and the implementation of the Law of the Sea.

The programme will include presentations and panel discussions covering topics such as marine protected areas, Marine Spatial Planning and data sharing in areas beyond national jurisdiction, including in the context of the BBNJ Agreement. Contributions will also address ocean data from areas including seabed geology and biodiversity.

The seminar is organised by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO and the Hydrographic Institute. Both in-person and virtual participation are available, although remote registration has currently reached capacity.
