Applications Open for the 2026 Mário Ruivo Prize

Applications are open for the sixth edition of the Mário Ruivo Prize - Ocean Generations, inviting young people aged 14 to 21 to create short films highlighting the importance of the Ocean.

The competition is open to individuals or teams of up to five members. Films must be up to seven minutes long, in Portuguese or subtitled in Portuguese. Entries can address the Ocean through four categories: Message, Creativity, Scientific Culture and Future, the latter being open to participants aged 14 to 17.

The prize aims to raise awareness of the Ocean’s importance as a life-support system and its role in climate regulation, food, transport and wider social, environmental and cultural benefits.

The prize honours Professor Mário Ruivo, a prominent Portuguese ocean scientist and advocate for responsible Ocean governance, who also promoted and chaired EurOcean from 2002 to 2008.

Applications are open until 30 September 2026.
