Researchers from CESAM at the University of Aveiro carried out the first mission of the BioAquaCV project in São Vicente, Cabo Verde, from 7 to 12 September 2026. In partnership with the Instituto do Mar de Cabo Verde (IMar) and the AIR Centre, the mission provided training for IMar technical staff on quality control, sampling, aquaculture monitoring and the use of biomarkers to identify biological risks.
The project aims to develop and transfer standardised, practical methodologies for aquaculture monitoring in Cabo Verde, while strengthening local scientific and technical capacity. The mission also included visits to aquaculture facilities, helping identify sector needs and opportunities for future collaboration on production efficiency, animal health and welfare, and sustainable aquaculture.
As part of the project, laboratory equipment was also provided to support the restoration of IMar’s scientific capacity following damage caused by Tropical Storm Erin in 2025.
