YOLA (Youth Ocean Leadership and Advocacy) contributed to the International Sopot Youth Conference in June 2026, bringing together international perspectives on youth engagement, ocean science communication and the blue economy.
The YOLA session featured contributions from speakers representing different geographical and professional backgrounds. Timberlyn Duncan, from the United States, discussed research approaches centred on people and place. Hadeer Elkhouly shared perspectives on youth leadership in the blue economy, drawing on experiences from Egypt and across Africa. Veronica Rotman explored how scientists can use digital platforms and short-form video to communicate research to wider audiences.
On 9 June, a hybrid session also provided young people, NGOs and researchers with an opportunity to explore and test YOLA’s Youth Ocean Advocacy online course.
The activities formed part of YOLA’s second pilot training in Poland, following the first pilot in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. The project aims to strengthen young people’s capacity to engage with ocean conservation and climate policy through interdisciplinary learning, communication and advocacy.
