V Symposium Ibero-African-American on Risks

V Symposium Ibero-African-American on Risks

The Portuguese Association for Risks, Prevention, and Safety (RISCOS), in collaboration with the Research Center for Local Development and Territorial Planning (CIDLOT) at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Cape Verde (FCTCV), the Department of Geography and Tourism at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra, and its institutional partners, is organizing the 5th Ibero-African-American Symposium on Risks, under the theme “Territory, Development, and Risks: from Global Strategies to Local Actions”. This event will take place in a hybrid format (in-person and online via Teams) from July 8 to 10, 2025, in Cape Verde.

The 5th Ibero-African-American Symposium on Risks aims to bring together diverse contributions from the sciences, “learning from the past” to extract lessons from adverse situations and, through new technologies and methodologies, to “prepare for the future,” particularly in the face of climate change. Focusing on education for risk reduction, we aim to “act today to protect tomorrow,” creating a space for knowledge exchange, discussion, and dissemination of different theoretical-methodological approaches to various risks, generated by multiple factors, while also exploring experiences and proposals for improving risk management. Since the results of these discussions can contribute to finding alternatives for risk management and inform policies for their improvement and mitigation, we challenge you to participate in this symposium by sharing the research and studies you have been conducting on these themes and presenting a paper.

Five panels are available for submission:

  • Panel 1: Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability
  • Panel 2: Natural, Anthropogenic, and Mixed Risks
  • Panel 3: Territorial Planning, Urban Planning, and Management
  • Panel 4: Social Development, Tourism, Education, and Safety Culture
  • Panel 5: Health, Food Security, and Technological Innovation

Contributions are welcome from anywhere in the world in English, Spanish, Portuguese, or French (there will be no simultaneous translation). You can also participate in the 5th Ibero-African-American Symposium on Risks without submitting a paper.

We encourage you to motivate your PhD, Master’s, and undergraduate students to also submit papers or, if not, to encourage your colleagues from your institution, school, or research group to participate. Finally, we kindly ask that you disseminate this symposium to anyone who may be interested in attending.

The deadline for the first call for abstracts is February 28, 2025.

There are two registration deadlines: one by March 31 and the normal deadline by May 31, 2025. After these dates, registration will still be possible, but with a higher fee.
